LOS ARCOS

Micro-apartment in Alcossebre, Spain.

Location: Alcossebre, Spain | Year: 2023 | Area: 350 sq ft

This former commercial space converted into a home in Alcossebre, Spain, had some architectural limitations and needs that have led to the design of the space thinking of volume instead of area.

The clients needed multiple storage areas, one larger for occasional access and others distributed throughout the home for daily use. On the other hand, a double bedroom with natural light, a space for the washer/dryer, kitchen, bathroom, and a living-dining area were required.

Taking advantage of the height of the home (10’4”), the interior layout is developed around a double-height wooden cube. On the lower level, there is the main storage area for occasional access, so the low height is not a problem. The bathroom also takes advantage of this storage space by creating a closet for the washer/dryer. At the top level of the cube, there is the bedroom with a double bed and storage, where a cantilever rises over the kitchen to maximize its reduced dimensions. In the bedroom, a window with textured glass has been installed to grant natural light as well as privacy to the space, a material that is also used in the access door.
